Having used only typography for the previous year of the festival, I wanted to use photography of people in the 2005 materials. It was a bit of a challenge mostly because of the difficulty in representing different types of people equally, since it is an international festival for both a lesbian and gay audience. The solution was to bring in several couples, each photographed in a kiss -- the key was to have the kiss as natural as possible and to avoid it seeming too sexualized or too staged. The festival has several different materials for promotion, so different portraits were used in different pieces of the materials to create a more diverse whole. On the site, the images randomly rotate on the home page each time it is refreshed. The website is derived largely from the structure of the previous year's site, but more streamlined. Flash is used to provide subtle visual accents in the header of each page, but the site otherwise is predominantly HTML.
